BVD 3/27/25 "What's in a name"

Bible Verse of the Day

2 God also said to Moses, “I am the Lord. 3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty,  but by my name the Lord I did not make myself fully known to them.

                                                            Exodus 6:2-3

In reading this passage above I was confused why the Father made a point of telling Moses and Aaron that He called himself God Almighty to their forefathers but wanted Moses and Aaron to refer to Him as Lord to the people.  If you grew up reading English these would almost appear interchangeable but if you were Hebrew you would understand the uniquely powerful differences.

I will be the first to admit I am as far from a Hebrew expert as you can be and I can be quite simple minded at times but this incredible discovery was very insightful.

God Almighty in Hebrew is El Shadday which can be translated to mean promises that will happen in time; such as the promises for the Israelite people for the freedom form their bondage.  This is part of the promises to the forefathers’

When the Father is referring to Himself as Lord which in Hebrew is Yahweh He was telling them two specific things the first one meaning the time to fulfill these promises is now and with the name Yahweh being very intimate, He was telling the people (and a doubting Moses and Aaron) I will walk intimately with you through this.

How incredibly cool and alive the Word of God is.   There is definitely amazing power in a name.   A side note it is really insightful and impactful to learn the different names and meanings of God and Jesus.
